I am so excited about this weekend. I get  to spend three intense days with a group of totally dedicated curly hair stylists  from all over the country.  We will be exploring new products and applications, cutting and styling techniques , methods for specific types of curls, and then we get to apply what we are learning on models.  These are the most dedicated , creative stylists I know, and am so  ready to be immersed in Curl Everything!   
   And guess what -  All my clients will get the benefit of all that I learn. Without all of you, there would be no point.

   Finding a  new stylist is hard. It's an intimate relationship that involves trust, and ongoing communication. Sound familiar ?  Yes . It's just like a good marriage , and almost as important !  So here are some pointers :

    ~ Research your area. Are you looking for a stylist with a special area of expertise? Perhaps a colorist , a curly hair specialist, someone who mainly does short cuts?  Then find all the information available. Look for examples of their work, reviews, products they use, websites, and any other area that concerns you. By the way, if you happen to see someone whose hair you love, ask them the name of their stylist . Don't worry , it's a complement.  They'll be glad to share the information.

    ~ Have a name?  Great . Make  the call and set up an appointment.  One option is to schedule for a consultation. That offers you time to consider going ahead with a cut or whatever service you need.  Want to go ahead and schedule a haircut?  Be sure to specify that you are a new client and will want extra time to talk.

    ~ The first appointment. This is the time to express exactly what you want ,and don't want. Some stylists may do an initial phone consultation, but a face to face meeting is crucial.   This is the time for the stylist to see you:  Not just your hair, but you. Your facial structure, and style of dress. Be Honest !  If  you leave for work at 4am, a style that involves daily maintenance is probably not going to be your first choice. You need to be on the same page. Describe your routine, including how often you wash and products used.  Visuals are always helpful, but be sure they're realistic. Remember: Jennifer Anniston doesn't look like that when she's relaxing at home. That casual tousled look involves many stylists doing a lot of work .  Pictures of your self are helpful, and pictures of what you don't want are equally helpful.

    ~ Trust yourself.  If you are uncomfortable for any reason, this may not be the relationship for you. It is a relationship of give and take, with both parties talking and listening. As I stylist, it always amazes how often a new client will say something like " I knew what they were doing was not what we agreed on and I was so upset ."   If you know , say something!  You have every right to feel you are being heard.
