The 2014 CHA Intensive was fantastic. Where else can you find a dedicated group of curly hair stylists that are not product driven. We're all about making the most beautiful curls possible.  The emphasis of this intensive was exploring different cultures and ethnicities.   Our models were from a variety of cultural backgrounds. One way we prepared for our models was exploring new products. This meant learning about the ingredients that go into curly hair products ,and how they affect  different types of curls. I love that group members have their  individual areas of interest and share them with all of us. Learning about ingredients is a new area for me but has been so helpful when it comes to choosing the right product for each curl type.
We also delved into how to get the most curl from fine wavy hair, new ways to cut and apply products. All about giving our clients the most beautiful, hydrated curls.
The area that was so exciting was not just new products, but new was to APPLY products, depending on the hair texture. That can make a huge difference. So it's not just about WHAT you use, but HOW you apply it.
All about making those curls even more beautiful!

I LOVE my CHA family for sharing their experience, knowledge, and creativity!!

Finding a New Stylist

Finding a  new stylist is hard. It's an intimate relationship that involves trust, and ongoing communication. Sound familiar ?  Yes . It's just like a good marriage , and almost as important !  So here are some pointers :

~ Research your area. Are you looking for a stylist with a special area of expertise? Perhaps a colorist , a curly hair specialist, someone who mainly does short cuts?  Then find all the information available. Look for examples of their work, reviews, products they use, websites, and any other area that concerns you. By the way, if you happen to see someone whose hair you love, ask them the name of their stylist . Don't worry , it's a complement.  They'll be glad to share the information.

~ Have a name?  Great . Make  the call and set up an appointment.  One option is to schedule for a consultation. That offers you time to consider going ahead with a cut or whatever service you need.  Want to go ahead and schedule a haircut?  Be sure to specify that you are a new client and will want extra time to talk.

~ The first appointment. This is the time to express exactly what you want ,and don't want. Some stylists may do an initial phone consultation, but a face to face meeting is crucial.   This is the time for the stylist to see you:  Not just your hair, but you. Your facial structure, and style of dress. Be Honest !  If  you leave for work at 4am, a style that involves daily maintenance is probably not going to be your first choice. You need to be on the same page. Describe your routine, including how often you wash and products used.  Visuals are always helpful, but be sure they're realistic. Remember: Jennifer Anniston doesn't look like that when she's relaxing at home. That casual tousled look involves many stylists doing a lot of work .  Pictures of your self are helpful, and pictures of what you don't want are equally helpful.

~ Trust yourself.  If you are uncomfortable for any reason, this may not be the relationship for you. It is a relationship of give and take, with both parties talking and listening. As I stylist, it always amazes how often a new client will say something like " I knew what they were doing was not what we agreed on and I was so upset ."   If you know , say something!  You have every right to feel you are being heard.

~ Good Luck!  Your new stylist is out there waiting just for you.

or  -  how to avoid daily washing or wetting your curls.

As a curly hair stylist, my goal is to have you love your natural texture, and making it as livable as possible . Part of that is accepting that everyday is different ,since there are so many variables at play with our curls.
In the beginning, your hair may need to detox from silicones, or other product build up. There are a few different ways to do that. I'll go into details in a later post.   Your hair also may be in real need of hydration, in which daily rinsing and conditioning may be needed.  Once you reach maximum hydration, a less demanding routine should be possible. It's all about preserving your curls, thus preventing frizz. When you do wash, a more heavy-handed product application can help give you more days of hydrated curls.
So  ~  here are some nighttime options.

       ~ The Pineapple or Unicorn
Bend all  the way over and gather your hair, or as much as you can, in a ponytail as close to your forehead as possible. Use a soft scrunchy, scarf, even panty hose or a round claw clip to fasten.  Check out your  ponytail. If you see any spots in need of a little hydration , you can take a little watered down conditioner and smooth out some curls , or scrunch it in. Be creative and thru trial and error make up your own night time cocktail.  As long as you use water soluble products, the sky's the limit. Remember - there's no right or wrong. You also may find that you need different products or routines depending on the weather, how your hair feels that day, or any other variables.

~ using a satin pillow case is much less abrasive on your curls, so if your hair is too short for the pineapple, this can be another option.   It's also a good idea with the pineapple.

   ~  A sleep cap

there are many different varieties of sleep caps - different fabrics, and sizes. The goal is the same - to preserve your curls at night. so the fabric is stretchy with slip. Again, there is no right or wrong, so you have to find what works best for you.
In the morning , flip up side down, shuffle the roots, maybe a little spritz and scrunch, and happy curl day!
